When I was 13, I technically saw my first Broadway show. It was the out-of-town tryout-tour-thing of Deaf West Theatre’s Big River. They brought it to Broadway as a revival a few months after I saw it in Houston, for free, at an outdoor theater in conjunction with Theatre Under the Stars. For all my kicking and pouting about it at the time, I’m really glad my mom made me go. It was such an excellent show.

Guess who played Tom Sawyer? Yep.

I’m pretty sure that’s the show that got me to look at more musicals than just the big ones, so, Thank You Big River.
